Children’s Dentistry
We recommend bringing children in for their first dental appointment at about 3 years old. We check their teeth and provided they feel comfortable, we also polish their teeth and apply fluoride. There are 2 reasons we do this:
1) At a young age, we can begin monitoring their oral health to ensure there is no disease and ensure their teeth positioning is correct, and
2) We can prevent issues from arising as well as begin to create a healthy, positive dental experience for the child which can then continue for a lifetime.
At Super Smiles Dental, we have TV screens on the ceiling and can play children’s favourite shows whilst in the dental chair – it’s an experience that children always love!

Frequently Asked Questions
Children’s dentistry is about preventive dental care and building relationships with kids. This way, their teeth will be looked after and they will become increasingly comfortable around dentists. Making it easier to get kids to attend necessary check-ups.
A children’s dentist is formally referred to as a Paediatric Dentist.
The cost will depend on the treatment that your child receives. Your child may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefit Scheme which is a benefit that can be used to pay for specific treatments at a private dentist.
Why is Children’s Dentistry Important?
At the age of 2, children should begin seeing a dentist. This way, the dentist can perform a visual examination of the teeth and address any parental concerns. By visiting the dentist at a young age, the dentist can also identify possible issues to look out for in the future.
During a child’s first dental examination, the dentist will look at the child’s teeth, address any concerns, identify possible issues and will provide tips on providing proper dental hygiene at home.
Low fluoride toothpaste can be used on children aged between 18 months and 2 years of age. From ages 2 through to 8, children may use regular toothpaste.
During your child’s first visit to our practice, one of our dentists will instruct parents and children on the proper dental hygiene to be carried out at home. By teaching good oral hygiene practices early, they will become a habit for your child.
Depending on the child’s teeth and the presence of any potential issues, appointments at Super Smiles Dental are recommended every six months or annually.
Around the age of 5, one of our dentists may recommend annual dental x-rays for a more in-depth evaluation and comprehensive view of your child’s teeth.
At Super Smiles Dental we can prevent issues from arising, however, preventing the development of tooth decay is up to the child as well. To prevent tooth decay you need to have good oral hygiene.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is available to those who are eligible for Medicare and receive at least one additional benefit. CDBS benefits can be used to pay for specific treatments at a private dentist.
Parents can prepare for their child’s dental appointment by explaining the importance of visiting the dentist. Parents can also highlight the benefits of visiting the dentist as well as the negatives of skipping dental appointments.
